The Conception of a True Modern Design:
In the most likely tale of origin, the Parsons Table was conceived in the 1930’s by Jean-Michel Frank, a French interior designer. Jean-Michel was well known for creating minimalist interiors from luxury materials. Today, he is recognized by leading interior designers around the world as one of the greatest sources of inspiration for many modern and contemporary designs.
While working as a professor at the Parsons Paris School of Art and Design, of Jean-Michel collaborated with his students to design a table so basic that it would retain its integrity whether sheathed in gold leaf, mica, parchment, split straw, painted burlap, or left unfinished. The resulting table, initially called the T-Square table by Jean-Michel, was later named for the school in which it originated. Paradoxically plain yet distinctive, it was only available as a custom-order project until 1963, when it was finally produced en masse in North America. Because of its striking appearance, the Parsons table remains a highly popular design. It is often seen as coffee tables, dining tables, side tables, and occasional tables.
